Not for any particular reason, but I'm thinking about adding some copepods. My logic is that I don't think they'd hurt, and since I have a young tank they will have time to develop into a reproducing colony before I add in anything that will make them snacks. If this is a good idea, when should they be added, and how? Dump them in?

Why not!?

good idea, i added bottles and bottles !
i bought them from ebay when they get here float the bottle for couple of hours then pour them in ! i also got some cheato for them to hide and breed in.
now i got more a pod tank than fish tank!!!
but mr and mrs mandarin very very happy!

I ordered copepods and live mysid shrimp from this place:

I couldn't tell you how the copepods are doing because they're so small and there were already some in the tank from the rock we bought, but it's almost 2 years later and there's still a thriving population of live mysid shrimp in the tank, depsite all those I've seen our fish eat.

Why are you guys paying for a bottle of copepods? Just buy some quality live rock... Or pull some established off CraigsList or something.

From time to time, the population may need replenishing if it is heavily preyed upon by fish like mandarins, certain wrasses, etc. The cost for a bottle of live copepods is easily cheaper than quality live rock locally in my area (nice rock sells for as much as $12 / pound). Even if established rock is available locally from someplace like Craigslist, there's not necessarily room for more rock in every tank.
