Thinking about getting some bluegill...

A 55 will keep a bluegill alive but it might never reach full size. Bluegill are also pretty mean as far as sunfish go. I'll ask you to consider some of the other more colorful, more peaceful sunfish first. Almost all sunfish are more attractive than bluegill and many are better suited for home aquaria.
If you do decide on Bluegill, I'd put no more than one in a 55 since if you introduce two, one usually remains after some time.

I know the pond I'd be getting the fish from also has pumpkinseed....are those any better?
Pumkinseed are better looking but get nearly the same size and slightly less aggressive to equal temper.
What state do you live in? I might be able to help better if I know.
Hmm. This is a tricky one. You live on the edge of a great many interesting fish but most are just out of your reach.
If you ever get to the Eastern part of your state and have access to marsh/swamp conditions, I'd recommend Bluespotted sunfish. This happens to be one of my favorites. You can easily house a dozen fish in a 55 gallon if that is all you keep. They're quite docile but aren't shy about eating (and eat frozen easily).
If you don't mind buying a sunfish Orangespotted sunfish are great. They live close to you (a bit of a drive SW in Ohio). They are also smaller than many sunfish and play well with others. You could hold a few in a 55 along with killifish and madtoms to make a nice community tank.
