Thinking about jumping into a tank!

So, what happened?

Did you go tank & accessory shopping?
We would love to hear what you got if you went. BTW, don't forget to de-chlorinate the water before adding the fish!

Went to Pet Smart on Sat morning and bought the tank! Got a 30 Gallon hex tank with matching stand. Also bought a hang on the back filter. The brand escapes me right now (sorry), but it is a filter with a sponge media plus two replaceable filters that have
charcoal embedded inside. The sales dude said it was the best hanging filter they had. It's cost was 39.99. Also bought gravel, a rock cave thing for the middle, and some plastic plants. Got everything set up and running on Sat. Also got some conditioner, which I put in the water. I have bee nrunning the pump with everything the tank since Sat. Can I put Amos and Bob into their new home now? Looks clean and inviting, the temp is at a pleasant 69 degrees and the water looks real clean. The kid at the store said to run everything for 24 hours and then add the fish. Also the girl at the register thought it was funny that I was spending close to $300.00 for goldfish!!!! Am i nut case or what?

You're not a nut case. At least, not around here!

I'd go ahead and add them, and do small daily water changes until the bacteria bed can establish itself (about 3-4 weeks). Feed lightly to help keep waste production low.

Hope you're happy with your new friends! Bet they will love their new home.

No your not a nut case. Next time you see that girl tell her that 'gold fish need love too'...

I have seen people spend alot more money than that for a pet mouse.

Sounds like your ready to add your fish. Make sure you dont just drop them in their new tank. After all you dont like it to much if someone pushes you into a pool do ya?

Acclomate the fish to their new enviorment. The easiet way to do this is to drain out about 2/3ed of the water in their bowl. (make sure they are still covered up). Then get a dixie cup and every 5 min add 1 dixie cup of tank water from the 30 into the goldfish bowls. Once the goldfish bowls are full of the new/old water then you can transfer them over to the new tank.

I envy you, O-G. I only wish I new about this forum before I made all my mistakes. I could have saved myself a lot of greif ( and money!). How are Amos & Bob liking their new digs? My guess is that their pretty pleased. If you got ( or are going to get) a test kit, you can moniter the progress of the beneficial bacterial culture in your tank. The Ammonia will rise, peak then gradually taper off as the nitrites lag in the same fashion. When both read zero for a couple of consecutive days, your tank is considered "cycled". Best of luck, buddy. ;)

By the way, Welcome to AC. I have been following this thread and was wondering the same thing.:) I really enjoy seeing new people coming into the hobby. I started a little over two years ago. Now I have 5 tanks. My wife said that is enough for now.:D

Put Bob and Amos into their new home last night. They sure appear to like the added room as they spent the entire evening exploring all of the new areas. I have the tank next to the entertainment center, so while the wife thought I was watching fear factor factor last night I was actually watching Amos and Bob!
Two things that I found surprising. First the two fish seem to have bonded, as they have all of this area, but they pretty much seem to stick together. The second thing was that my 14 year old Golden Retriever sat there and watched the fish for quite some time. See seemed to enjoy watching the fish as much as I did :-)

Intelligent animals like dogs enjoy a bit of visual stimulation as much as anyone.

Kudos for the rescue; my crustiness was aimed at whoever thought they should use goldfish as ornaments, not you.

This is to my mind a totally excellent introduction. A good sized tank, no overstocked. You could have Amos and Bob for years, and see them get several inches in length. As you've noticed, goldfish are not shoalers, but are quite sociable towards each other.
