thinking about shrimp

Don't mean to hijack the thread but I am also very interested in adding Shrimp to my 20 gall. Right now I have 8 cardinal tetras, 1 ADF and 1 Betta (This is the second betta in this tank, seems less aggressive but considering taking him out anyway). However the only shrimp I can find at any local LFS are Ghost Shrimp. I was mainly concerned of the size being smaller then Amano Shrimp if size would be an issue.

If I were interested in Amano does anyone have a recommendation for a good online site to order them?

Thanks,
Curtis

i have bamboo shrimp, unlike other shrimp, these have fans instead of arms, they are borwn in color and ahve a white strip going down the back, in the wild they are found in red tones. They get about 3 inches. They ussually move around the tank to fins a good current and stand in front of the current and filterfeed. Incase anyone is confused on what filterfeeding is, its when they filter the water for algea or other organism. I drop 3 small algea wafers in ever couple of days, it desolves in the water and the current spread it out, at this time the bamboo shrimp filterfeed into their mouth. There very cool to look at when they feed. and ur 20gl is enough room, i have 1 in my 10g, had 2 but one died :-(. Make sure u clean ur gravel tho, to much waste can make the bamboo sick, and they tend to filter feed on the decor and gravel, so just maintain the tank clean and they'll be fine

I've heard good things about www.franksaquarium.com He does have lot of different kinds of shrimp. A quality fish store is pretty likely to have amanos though. They will usually call them algae eating shrimp. Mine are more tan than clear and they have a stripe down their backs. I do remember that they were almost transparent when I go them though. One word of warning-amanos like to try and escape and unlike ghost shrimp they can go pretty far on dry land.

so how can i prevent their escapes? and how would they get out in the 1st place????? climb on the leaves up hi?

Ensure that there are no holes in the hood. Most escapees either leap out or scamper along filter tubes or electrical cords.

Well, if say a fish startles them they *jolt* backwards really quickly. They can do it right out of the tank. I have read that they will also climb out if the water quality in the tank is bad, they are pretty sensitive to poor water quality. they would escape through the open strip on the back of the hood- so that would be what you need to seal.

Actually from what I have read they can only be raised in full salt- it's a pretty copmlicated process, evidently.

Amongst the species most likely to be available to the North American aquarist, this holds true only for Amanos (Caridina japonica), filter shrimp (Atyopsis and Atya spp.), and a few Macrobrachium spp. Ghost shrimp (Palaemonetes spp.), other Macrobrachium spp. (namely, redclaw and pearl shrimp), and other Caridina spp. can be bred in full freshwater (though fish and power filters claim most young in typical community setups).

I was referring to the amanos- sorry, I should have been more clear. So the same is true for the filter feeders, huh? Darn it. I am going to redo one of my 20s to include some of those soon, I was hoping they would breed.

ok so i have to seal the back of the tank-area. what would i use to cover it? tape? plastic wrap? money :D ? no lol

and i have a 2.5 gal minibow, could i put a shrimp or 2 in there? if so how many and what kind? :duh:

I think you should use money. Or plastic. ;). You could definitely put a couple of cherry shrimp in a 2.5. put some java ferns in with them and you'll have a cute little tank.
