Thinking of starting a malawi tank

Cool, thanks for the pics! Now my only other problem is going to be telling the rusties M/F apart. It seems like it's a little tough but doable,........ but I really don't know how to tell. Although my lfs had never steered me wrong so far either maybe I'll just ask him.

Had to edit out this post. Didn't realize that there was another page started and typed in something that made no sense at all.

I don't think you will have any problems with a group of 6 rusties randomly chosen. Don't forget to add them with the 6 saulosis; all the 12 fishes at once for better results. Remember also to have a lot of rocks in the tank.
Well, I hope this was of some help. Now, time to sleep my friend; the boss (my wife) is telling me to go to bed. Oh my Gosh, after 26 years she still takes care of me!

Thanks for all the help at such a late hour last night Efors! Much appreciated.

Sounds great with the saulosi and the rusty's should make for a nice setup must have photos when your done my friend..

Thanks for all the info! Will do a build thread as I go.

One more question, well actually a couple more. If this needs to be in another seperate thread then I'll start one. The rock work/structures concern me a little as I wouldn't want them to fall over. What's the best way to go about building them so they are stable enough? Also do I have to go with a sand bottom? The tank came with river pea gravel and I like the looks of it and would like to get some more. I like to have a deep bed of gravel in my tanks. I have 200lbs worth of black gravel in my 75 gal community.

You could always silicone/glue the rocks together if it really worries you. I just kind of stack mine very carefully, and haven't had any problems, it also depend on what type of hardscape you will be using. For the substrate ehh, thats really just preference if you want to go pea gravel go for it. Looking forward to the build thread. :)

It was a pleasure to be of some help! Don't forget the build thread and some pics of your tank setup.
For the rockwork, I just stacked them carefully as ChrisK did or you can glue them as he said; but put the rocks directly over an egg crate on the tank's bottom and then fill it with the substrate you want.
Good luck and any question, ask for help! :thm:

Wow great minds think alike i was just going to suggest egg crate but efors beat me to it hehehe, evil minions at work i tell you hehehe, the egg crate in question is a grid like plastic device to help off load pressure of heavy rocks and in the event of a colaspe the gravel will be your best helper to avoid such catastrophy via cracks and such in your tank..

As for sand or gravel with Mbuna its your call most hobbyist just prefer sand over gravel due to its consistency so that the fish will be able to move it around or dig in it a little easier as for shellies they say that they really need sand due to their small size i am currently re-establishing sand in my shellie setups aragonite is what i am using..
