I would like to get a 20gallon tank for our living room at some point in the future I have some knowledge on fishless cycling as I have a small 10 gallon tank upstairs with two African Dwarf Frogs that are doing great.

I know to start off with a few fish after cycling etc but I would like some info on what I am thinking..

I would like for the 20 gallon tank (eventually)
1 Gourami (what kind of gourami for a 20 gallon tank that would be a middle/top dweller??)
7 Neon Tetras
3 Cory cats
2 Ottos after algi established

Would this be fully stocked? How many gallons would I have left if it isnt?
I would really like to have a nice eye catching tank with all levels covered not everything on one level..
Any other suggestions or ideas?

that sound like a fine plan, but I think you could stand to get 3 more cories.
(BTW, a dwarf gourami is a good one for a 20G.)

i think that you would be fully stocked.

a good gourami for a 20 gallon and the stocking you are planning is a Dwarf gourami

your asking if you will have gallons left made me think that you were going by the inch gallon rule, which is totally outrageous and whoever thought up that rule needs to be scolded by some people on this site.

Hmmm well I got my dwarf frogs about 2 years ago so maybe my info is a little outdated I think it was inch per gallon!! I'm not out to overstock a tank because that just makes for a sick tank and I don't want that in our living room

Thankyou for the info on the dwarf gourami do they swim nearer the top/middle though? Or lower?

Also some tanks come with flourescent lighting and are more expensive is it much better for the tank or is it more for aesthetics?

What is the other option? Incadesent? In that case the florescent lighting is better. It is cheaper to run, does not get as hot so the water temp. is more stable, especially in the summer this is very important, and the fish in general just look better with florescent lighting.
