Hey guys complete and utter newbie when it comes to invertibrates here but I have a freshwater tank and was wondering if I could add maybe some sort of shrimp to it? I have guppies, a plec and a loach just now? If I can I can just been enchanted by the idea since reading about them!

Guppies will be fine. Pretty sure the plec will be fine. That loach will probably get to snacking if you add shrimp. You might be able to pull it off if you have a well planted tank.

yeah, i agree that the loach would find the shrimp to be a tasty snack most likely. Better yet would be to start a small (5 or 10g) shrimp tank. When they don't have a threat they are much more visible and active.

thanks for the advice! So what kind of shrimp would you recomend? Will I need to suplement their diet with anything (Sorry as I said complete newbie) Also I'm being told my loach is actually an albino algae eater if that makes a difference?

a chinese algae eater? they are known to get agressive as they get larger, i don't think it would work very well.
as for what to feed the shrimp, mine like algae wafers, sinking wafers, veggies, and crab cuisine (made by hikari)

as for type of shrimp, there are many that are wonderful, i am a particular fan of cherry shrimp.

The common starter shrimp is red cherry shrimp. They'll live off of algae and whatever fish flakes get missed by any other inhabitants. It helps to feed them an algae wafer every other day or so. You can also toss in zucchinis slices every once in a while. They're not picky eaters.

Uh turns out the loach is in fact an albino algae eater. It was sold to me as aloach when I first started keeping fish and I didn't know any better!
