A while back I posted about my Regent HOB filter not working and then mysteriously coming back to life on it's own. I have a new filter now and just keep the other as backup......anyway, I just moved the tank and when I got everything set back up I found that my heater was stuck on! It's the heater that came with the 29 gal. Wal-Mart kit (as did the filter).

I had been unplugging it and plugging it back in to keep the temp stable. It's turned down to 72 and it was heating the tank to 80F before I noticed it. Anyway, I bought a cheapo Whisper HOB heater last night since I didn't have enough cash on hand for a quality submersible. When I got home and prepared to switch them, I noticed the indicator light was off! I have been keeping an eye on it and it's definitely working again. After two days of being stuck on, it is now functional again.

What is it with the equipment that comes with the Regent kits? I thought the thing with the filter was strange, and now the heater does the same thing :confused:
 
Thats extremely unreliable pieces of kit, i certainly would get stuff from that manufacturer again. Weird though.
 
regent filters havent failed for me they are just rebadged marineland filters; ive had some running for 4 years or so straight. is your whisper the submersible or not? i have one of the subs. in my betta tank and its working. i notice you gotta keep it away from direct water flow cause the vibrations keeps the heater on sometimes.
 
The Whisper heater I bought is one of the hang-on-back models, not the submersible. It's not what I want, but figured it would do in a pinch. After reading the instructions though, it kinda has me worried. I've never had a heater before that you have to go through a complicated process to get it to work. It doesn't have a temp adjustment, which is why it was so cheap I assume.

I'll buy either a Via Aqua or Proheat titanium heater for it in the near future. My 40 gal. has a Via Aqua on it and I love it.

The equipment that came with my kit did it's job for a year, which I guess isn't terrible considering the package price. It certainly isn't reliable though, and it would have been better to buy just the tank and get quality equipment seperately (which I would have done if I had the $$ at the time).
