I learned almost everything I know about fish from my dad. He's had pretty much every setup over the years, and my grandmother (his mother) kept freshwater fish, too. My first real tank came from him. However, he's never been as much into planted setups- he's done some fresh, but more salt and cichlids over the years.
He just called me to ask for advice.
He's setting up a planted tank, and he wanted to know about substrate. And lighting. And c02. And my plant experience.
Very cool feeling! He has the money to have a more high-tech setup than me, but we'll see how it goes.
(By the way, it makes me feel a little guilty.
I just started grad school, and my fish tank got pushed down the priorities a little. Fish are all healthy, doing WCs and everything, and the plants are flourishing... too much! I haven't trimmed in a long time, and it's getting to be jungle-like. :1zhelp
