My local ***** has some of the most beautiful gouramis I've seen, but lately they've been getting shipments of gouramis with ich. All attempts I've made to get the owners to do something about it have been unsuccessful, they just put the gouramis in a crowded tank with healthy fish and end up killing the whole tank.

Any suggestions of something that could be done about this?

well let me ask this..

when there is a pet store with treating bad cats and dogs bad.. we can call the humane society .. and before you know it you the next michael vick...

so why cant i call the humane society or local animal control on wal mart or petco or pet smart for knowingly harboring sick fish in healthy tanks ... or like i have seen at wal mart countless times dead fish just floating in the tank.. current to strong for fish ..

what do you guys think?

Do not purchase anything from the store. Ask to speak to the stores General Manager, or aquatic specialist manager. If they are not there, ask for their name and a number to reach them. (Can be store's number, just make sure you obtain a way to reach the actual manager). If you get a hold of the manager explain to them what you've posted about.

If you cannot get a hold of a manager, or find the manager is shady, call 888-824-7257, which is *****'s customer service line. Complain about your local store, use the names of the manager, employees, be specific, etc. I have done this with somewhat good result.

If this does not work, contact your local SPCA and demand them to investigate the store for suspected animal cruelty (denying animals proper care, etc)

Also, I'd like to add merely shunning the store is not a good method. Unless you act to stop the cruelty, it will continue.

You can try, but don't expect much. Fish don't get the sympathy that furry pets do.

What I would do is make it clear to the store owner that I will not shop at a store with such poor standards. Then follow through.

this drives me nuts. ok, so fish cant scream when they need something, but they need just as much care as cats and dogs do (good lord our fish are spoiled; we have a shelf in our living room just for their food as well as an area in our freezer). id say try the customer service and peta things. maybe with the customer service guys try taking a tactic of how the consumers are losing out on value due to the substandard fish?

PETA is not your friend. They wish to abolish the keeping of all animals, whether for food, work, companionship, or any other reason.

Unfortunately there is not much you can do.

This thinking just makes me rage. Sitting on our hands and turning our cheeks has caused the hobby and big box stores to plummet to their current state. If we actually DO SOMETHING and push for regulations, abolishing and w/e else.... we can make a difference! I'm sorry, but I am NOT one of the people just content with walking away from the problem and letting it continue to exist.

The OP came here asking for advice to make a difference. Follow his/her lead and get active to stop fishy abuse or don't post your "advice".

And I meant this post to be harsh and confrontational. This hobby needs a wake up call.
