I've been on fishlore and a couple of other forums and the question of which silicone to use keeps popping up. Plus people are losing fish so I figured I'd set the record straight. The RIGHT silicone to use is GE Silicone I w/o mold or mildew additives. Those additives will kill the heck out of your fish. I mean absolutely. If you use GE Silicone I Clear it does not have this additive, thus will not ruin your tank/harm your inhabitants. It won't say protects against mold/mildew anywhere like GE Silicone II does. I've used Silicone I Clear on 2 fully un-sealed tanks and after 36 hours of curing then another couple worth of rinsing and dechlorinating they had perfectly healthy fish in them. Just my $0.02, I figured it was time for another post like this. Cheers!

Every brand has a helpline, every product has a description to it, so if anyone is curious as to which is safe to use, it's as simple as calling the helpline. Not AFTER you've already resealed the tank, but before ;)

Considering the fact that GE is apparently no longer labeling which products do/don't contain mildewcides, I would be the sort of nut who would call no matter what, even if I got exactly the kind that was recommended by XYZ member, who used it successfully.

That seems to be the big issue. GE Silicone II doesn't seem to say it protects against mold/mildew anymore.

But from the other discussions it appears that it does though. That for some reason GE took the protection labels off the container.

Either way, if both are available, Silicone I is stronger so better to use anyways. Just not as many color choices.

This was posted and nobody had any problems with fish death after doing it?

How to Reseal an Aquarium With GE Silicone II

For the safety of your fish or aquarium pets, your aquarium must be sealed properly. If water is leaking out at an alarming rate, this will not only damage your home, but will hurt your pets. GE Silicone II is a silicone-based caulk that adheres more quickly than other silicone-based caulks, making it great for sealing against water leaks. Silicone II will help in resealing your aquarium. Black or clear will keep it attractive, as opposed to other colors that may be more of an eyesore.

There was a recent thread about someone who assumed GE silicone II was the culprit in killing their fish after resealing it. In their case though, I believe their tank was not cycled though and contained fresh stock.

I guess GE I has been used alot with no reports of problems. I think next time i use something it will be the choice, just to be on the safe side..
