thoughts about an inch per gallon replacement

okay
I think I am having a stupid day.
Snakeie, where is your article?
Maatlan, I get the general idea and it would be fun to play with but I am missing something...
What would an SI of 1 mean, for instance. would it mean "one of these could fit in a naked ten?
maybe more examples. maybe type really slowly, use smal words and big letters lol.
just a thought on the filteridea. yeah, but, if SI truly incorporated territoriality, activity etc, that wouldnt translate so readily to filters.

sorry an SI is a replacement for inch in inch per gallon. you get 1 SI /gallon

i swear i just made a forum about this just this week. humm the old inc/gallon, it used to work but not no more. to many factors to play with like length, width, height of fish, are the fish low, medium, top dwellers, how much waste is going to be produced, how much filtration do u need, will the fish be happy, some fish school and others don't.

here is a method, when buying fish always do research and buy according to what your tank can handle and are the fish going to be happy. so to be honest unless you have the government to back you financialy to experiment no one is going to actualy figure this controversy out. use judgment, knowledge, and what reliable people have told you.

Ahh .. territory location. that needs to be in there somewhere.

I realize that thats the "best" way. but unfortunatly we, the people on boards like this looking and providing help, are not the ones driving the industry. Its the people who will NOT research the fish. Its the ones that buy the pretty 12" orange fish and complain when it dies in the plastic bucket its been living in for 3 weeks.

There are just some people that will not research or think about purchases. These are the ones that this type of rating would be idealy targeted at. Believe me. I teach and I have seen these people. they believe only what others tell them, if nobody tells them then its not worth knowing.

Sorry if this sounds angry, it really is not. But i have -30 seconds to get to class and dont have time to soften the language :)

edit----------

class is over. I added some stuff You mihgt want to read again.

I don't think filters can add to the capacity of a tank. filters just move waste around. Only frequent waterchanges can make a tank able to hold more than the volume would suggest. But that means that system is dependant on a care giver always being around.

Now if that filter is a sump that adds volume to the system then it could improve things.

snake ice-true, who would want to do frequent water changes, but yet it is possible.

maaltan-i was depading on whether (spelling) to add territory or aggresion, being that i hope the lfs people arent that stupid. not offending any of the good one, am i

Better than devise a new useless rule of thumb. How about working to shut down stores that don't educate their staff. I'm tired of overhearing so much BS from the flunkies at some of these stores. I agree that responsibility of research belongs to the consumer however if you allow stores such as Walmart to sell living animals then there will always be impulse buyers. I was in total disbelief at a lfs when the "fishguy" sold a night goby and neons to a Mom who said she knew nothing about fish.

fish stores should use this system,

beginner fish section
have fish in groups like schooling, size, and aggresion and with those little information flip cards available to read

intermediat fish section
same as begginer

expert fish secting
same as intermediat

And a free pamplet to anybody that has never had experiance with fish, and they would have to read before they could purchase that day.

And how about a costumer log book where the lfs could keep a profile of your tank so they can give you the best options available to your setup with your current tank.

Even though this is far fetched and would never work, its structure and protection for the consumer. Even though this system may drive your business into the ground at least you know that you treated you costumers with dignity and gave them your fullest effort to make them and their fish happy.

Is this a dream or could it happen?

pamphlets and logbooks exist. unfortunately you have to buy one of those starter kit tanks to get it. While this would probably be the most common route for the nieve user (no offence, a valid computer programming term, now offending would me my preferred term "idiot a-hole user" that crams money in the floppy drive to pay for an ebay auctin, dont laugh its happened ), it would more often than not be accompanied by a bag of fish. So, unfortunately, by the time the person reads it (if it doesn't go directly to trash with the packing material) its too late.

Now, to defend a petsmart employee, when i went to buy dwarf puffers she flat out would not sell them to me until i dazzled her with my knowledge:

employee: Now you know what your getting into by buying these fish right, not everyone can handle them.

me: Yeah they need live or maybe frozen food(if your lucky) 80 deg water, very intolerant to ammonia and nitrite so tank HAS to be cycled. Males will kill each other and the tank has to be HEAVILY planted or will also kill all others. Males have brown stripe on belly with iridescent cracks or "wrinkles" around thier eyes. females are more rounded and spotty usually.

employee: you may purchase them... you mean the male and females are different..cool

I know that was off topic but its a fun story :)
