I have been considering building a small tank (10-30G) wet/dry setup for a while. Seems like great idea increase the overall volume of the sytem, large bio-mass area and well exposed to the air.

Having said all that, I could not find or figure out a design that was unobtrusive with a small tank.

I like some of the cannister design with pvc pipe, but (no flames please) I would like to provide the bio-media with more oxygen.

My thought was what if I take one of the vertical designs: Filter MEdia at the top, then carbon , then bio-media, and added a large air stone under the bio media?

Thoughts?

No problem as long as you vent it.

Air stones are used under the W/D portion of of a W/D filter for this purpose.

The larger the diameter of PVC the better, filter media needs to be wide not deep.

Make sure the water can bypass the media if the filter clogs, and watch for channeling in the filter media.

Why carbon?, do you have a chemical problem?

Got any pix of your setup?

Have not built it yet. Just working out the design issues.

Not how to vent a canister and not have it leak as the water is under pressure. I figured the pressure would take care of itself via the outlet. I will have to put something in case the output clogs, but will figure it out.

Still working on a good cap design to allow for easy cleaning.

Okay, so do you want to fill me in or at least point me in the right direction?

Yoou obviuosly have been done this road before. Point me to that road and I will go from there.
