Thoughts on Night time lighting...

not 100% sure what the fish get out of it but it gives you a chance to see your nocturnal fish, like my black ghost knife, i can actually see cruising the tank for food at night now with my DIY led lunars, made with 4 automotive leds, and a 120v ac adapter to dc (range between 1.5 to 12 volts), cost me 20 bucks and well worth it IMO.

I have 2 of the LED Marina LED kits and the LED HUB. 55 gallon was too long to have just one. The fish seem to gather near it at night time and it allows me to see them as well. Plus they are a heck of a whole lot cheaper than the light hoods, 15-20 bucks. Each hub will control up to three lights. For a tank of your size I would start with the one hub and continue onto two. They are completely sub-mergible as well.

I've got one of the hubs with 3 of the blue units hooked to it, cost me about $62 out the door from my local petsmart. Crappy photo, camera doesn't like all the darkness and without a tripod it gets blurry. Also this was before most of my plants. With all the lights off at night it looks like there are dolphins swimming across my carpet with the fish cross the led's.

What does night time lighting do for the fish?

In "theory" the nightime light is supposed to simulate moonlight conditions. It provides visibility for the fish, especially the non-nocturnal species. My fish all seem to gravitate towards the "moonlight" each and every night, so they seem to enjoy it and I can see my fish as well.

I personally run my led's all night long as they pull next to nothing power wise to operate.

Just be sure that they aren't so bright that the fish can't sleep. Some people have noticed that with the cold cathode setup like mine, anything over 6 to 9 volts and the fish tend to be restless.

I guess I'll have to watch that but as you can see from the picture above there's not a whole lot of light in there with them on and the fish all have tons of places to hide at night.

My Nightime lighting...

Just wanted to post a few photos of my nightime lighting, as you can see from the main photo, the center of the fish tank is completely dark as well as the hiding spots. Should be plenty of room for them to "escape" the light.

Good Luck with yours!
