Thoughts on returning fish when they get too big

Spartan,

Very cool pics!! I would pay good money to see those fish in a public aquarium. I'd never have the space (nor talent/time) to own any, but I'll look at pics of them any time!

Of all the hobbies and of all the animals as pets (dogs, cats, reptiles, fish, rats, etc.....), fish are considered the most "disposable". If a fish cost 500 dollars, would there still be ignorance? No doubt, but there would be less. People do not care for their fish the way they should, at least they don't in the beginning. When I first started this hobby, I didn't cycle my first tank, didn't do WC's nearly as often as I should have, and was a genuine ingorant sap. Now I do all that I can and try to learn for the better of my fish. This hobby starts off with the most ignorance over all other pets (of which I was guilty of). People think fish + water = success. The difference is learning and correcting your bad ways. Tankbusters will always be sold because people will always buy them, whether or not they have the space.

A great tank with great space for pacus

Spartan, I have been to that bar, it is pretty cool , but I still think the arapama needs a bigger tank, but it is better than what I said before.

I say screw it. I currently have 2 convicts (mating pair), 8 exodons, 1 small red devil, common pleco, 1 pictus cat, and a raphael in my 55 gallon. My tank has massive filtration, and everything seems fine and has been this way for months. I realize the red devil will outgrow everything and that is fine.

What if this was a dog or a cat or some other higher animal. Would you say' "Oh well I can't keep it got to big. I guess I will take it out back and shoot it."

It is just now way to treat a living creature.

I agree, even though its HUGE its still too small.
If i ever go back to visit relatives i'm definitely going to hit it up!
How was it? Did they jack up the prices to pay for the fish?

If you shot a dog because it got too big, you could go to jail on animal cruelty charges. Not so with fish. Also, Ebay has a no live animal policy that they strictly enforce, except for fish, snails and other aquatic critters. What sort of message does that send? Are fish not live animals? I agree with the posters that say it is an attitude mostly seen with fish. I also agree that there will always be people who want tankbusters. There are people who want huge birds for the status symbol, not because they know how to care for and love them.... (and usually these birds wind up in rescues because of that...). There is a petstore in town that has a huge shark in (well, o.k. it's only about 3' now, but it will get bigger, I'm thinking nurse shark, but not sure). THey are not going to sell it, it is only for display because of its size etc. However, it is not much better than offering it for sale because they can't properly house it either. It is already too big for their store.... And there are tons of public aquaria that are over run with sharks from situations similar to this. They just don't have the room to take more in,and it's not wise to just drop the shark back in the ocean...

Well thanks all for contributing to an interesting discussion, even if it is old hat to most of you.

WHY WHY?! Why would you buy a Fish that can bust your tank?! Is taking 5 mins to google the max size REALLY that difficult?! and if you can't accomodate the right tank because of money issues or room issues then maybe your in the wrong "interest" Fish are not DISPOSABLE, they are just fragile. I have had 14 dogs and 3 cats and NONE of them have needed as much special attention and care as my fish. but I LOVE MY FISH! I cry when ever a betta or ADF dies. Perhaps I am crazy but these are living creatures too and they desearve as much of good (though short alot of time) life as possible. They are unlike any of creatures you can keep as pets and so entertaining.

:OT: Did they jack the prices up to pay for the fish?, huh :thud: The prices are jacked up in Japan as it is, I can't remember what a beer cost in this bar , but paying anywhere from $10 to $40 for a beer is ridiculous! :duh:
