I was wondering about your free floating or in-tank plants. I notice the roots are deep somewhat stunted and appear to be enveloped in something that looks like fungus or slime, or is that just an camera playing tricks? After a second look it appears that the brown haze is around the root stock is actually a plastic shield of some sort with algae on it.

yeah I cut up a tube and slipped it over the mangrove roots for protection and to encourage them to grow down and not outward. theres some algae that's hard to get. I'm working on another setup for this to avoid the algae.

You may want to consider that those tubes may be blocking the flow of nutrients to the roots. However if you were to make a manifold powered by either a power head or simple air pump to move water through the tubes braining nutrients past the roots on a continual bases, it may be better alternative and stimulate growth and root production.
