This is the shelf I've been using for my 10g that I want to use for a 40g breeder: http://www.lowes.com/pd_101932-1281...L=?Ns=p_product_qty_sales_dollar|1&facetInfo=

Maximum Pounds Per Shelf (lbs.)800.0

Problems:

actual tank dimensions: 36 1/8" x 18 3/16"
actual stand dimensions: 36" x 18"
(overhang seems negligible but exists nonetheless)
top of stand is very weak particle board

Possible Solutions:

Use three boards of wood (1" thick, 18" W x 5.5" L) spread across the top of the shelf/stand. See attached picture

or

Leave as is, use the particle board

or

Three boards of wood + particle board on top

Thoughts? My biggest concern is that all three options have a slight overhang.

Now....I'm not a very handy person, so maybe I'm completely wrong about this...but what if you used the shelf as framework and put plywood or whatever around it and a piece to cover the edge of those pieces on top? you can cut out spaces for the corner poles, and maybe make cabinets to have access to any lower shelves you may cover up. Should be enough to support just that little bit of overhang, I would think.

What brand of tank are you using?

I have used that shelving for double stands for 30 gallon breeders. It has to be built around the bottom tank. I think I used the particle board under the tank, because I thought the metal on the tank frame might create pressure points.

Thats what I was thinking. it would take care of the overhang and look much better.
