I have a couple of questions I've thought of while reading the other posts:

1) If you're going to use regular rock as a base and then seed it with live rock...how much live rock should you use? For example, in a 38-gallon tank, if I put in 30 lbs. of dead rock and 8 lbs. of live rock on top of that, would that do it?

2) What do you think about buying used protein skimmers (like CPR or Aqua C Remora)?

3) If you don't have corals, is there a certain amount of lighting you need for live rock?

Thanks, you all are so helpful.

1. Yes, that would do it. The more LR you use, the quicker it will seed, obviously. Also what do you mean by "regular rock?" Try to find stuff that is very pourous, otherwise you'd be compromising on its effectiveness as a filter.

2. I see nothing wrong with that if it works.

3. The rock itself doesn't need light. You may loose some of the photosynthetic life that hitches in with the rock, but you'll still reap all the benefits of having LR in your system.
