Hello. I’ve got tree type of substrate to try in my planted tanks.
Pea Gravel I bought it from Wal-Mart for $2.39 per 14.1L bag
Turface is from our local John Deere landscape dealer with special order which took 2 months to arrive. All sports pro cost $18.73 per 50lb bag,Athletics pro league S11.98 per 50lb bag.
I rinse All sports pro 3-4 times and it become pretty clear
Athletics pro league contain black clay and even after 12-15 rinses is still muddy.
They are in 2 different tanks with RO water .Tomorrow I’ll add Seachem Equilibrium and KH buster to fix the water and will test water.
All comments are welcome.

I like the looks of both turface substrates quite a bit. more favorably the black one.

Have you checked whats in them? its all natural stuff right? no chemicals?

You don't mention the size of the tanks...I really like the look of the pea gravel but imagine it would look better in a bigger tank, like 40 and up. Say a 20 long, minimum. And the black is indeed attractive; it looks pretty much like the house brand substrate I got from Aquariumplants.com for my 10g. However you say it is hard to rinse clean so I suppose it depends on how much work you want to go to to use it.

Or you could combine them. Maybe the tan (cleaner) All-sport in the front half of the tank and pea gravel in the back, or mixed around like a streambank? Put the fine stuff under all of it for mass, then the gravel on top to build height. The fine stuff is a lot easier to put plants into, but then if you have any digging/rooting fish the gravel would deter them from tearing up whatever's planted in that part of the tank.

All imho of course. ymmv. :)

So you use the Plant substrate made by aquariumplants.com? i want to get it but i havent really heard much about it. do you like it?

I'll try them in one 10gal and 2x20gal tanks for 2-3 months. Lather one I'll buy bigger tank 75 or 120 and will use one of those substrate. I have 40gal long with eco complete+black gravel mix for 7-8 months now and I like it so far.

I have never tried those three, nor do I know what is in it.

If you have "tried Eco-C and like it", why are you changing??

I have Eco-complete with black sand mix in my 120---OK also.

Water get clear after 12h with filters runing.I'm prety happy.I'll test water tonight.
