Welcome to the forum!

In a 55, yes. In a 30, no. If you want tiger barbs, you could keep them and some serpae tetras.

I have kept Tiger Barbs with Rainbow Sharks together for quite a few years now. They seemed to do fine in a 12-gallon, 40-gallon, and now a 55-gallon. But, my tanks have always been heavily planted, so there is always somewhere for the Rainbow Sharks to hide out. I have had three Rainbow Sharks (down to only two now) with as many as seven Tiger Barbs, and I have seen no different reactions between the fish in either the small or large tanks.

Welcome to AC, and my suggestion would be not to keep the tiger barbs with the shark. Many people say that if kept in a decent sized school (6-10) then tiger barbs will keep their aggression to themselves. I have not found this to be the case, my school of 8 successfully killed almost all of my corys before I removed them from the tank. Some people believe that tiger barbs should be kept in a species only tank and I'd have to say I agree with this.
