In my 55g community cichlid tank there are currently 2 green sevs 2.5" 1 Red Hump Earth Eater 1.5" and some assorted syno cats all small none are mean. I was wondering if tiger barbs would be ok since I dont know exactly how large they grow?? Would I be better off with giant danios?

FH, I have read where either are good for dithers, but the Danios are faster. In either case, larger ones work better...they don't get eaten. :) Barbs like to nip fins, so you might was to keep that in mind. Danios grow larger (about 3 inches) compared to Barbs.

I know about the danios I had a school that grew to over 4" and they were very cool to watch I was hoping for the tiger barbs to bring out a little color in my tank does anyone know how big they grow or of any other colorful dithers that get 3" thanks

With the cichlid species you mentioned, tiger barbs would be fine as dithers, even in the long term. Geophagus species are not at all predatory, and Severums have very small mouths. In the extremely long term, if you turn out to have a pair of Severums and they get to full size and start breeding, the 55g may wind up being too small and you might want to remove the tiger barbs and the Red Hump, but that is pretty far down the road as a possibility.

The 55g is currently my community cichlid tank and I am planning on mabey a female red hump and possibly a gold sev aswell I know they will need a 100g+ tank down the road but thats no biggie I will get them one. So do you guys think the tiger barbs will tear up the rest of the fishes fins or will they be ok? Also how aboyt cherry barbs anyone have some info on them?
Thanks
