ok so i just got a tiger barb and he's acting wierd

he's only swimming at the very top of the water... he won't go down .. is this normal?

is he swimming there or does it appear he tends to float and cannot swim down deeper? occasionally tiger barbs will get a problem with their swim bladder. sometimes this is only temporary, other times this needs to be treated. I'm not sure what medications are made for this so just check the medications at the store for swim bladder disease. If he's just swimming around, it's probably because he needs to be in a group, not alone. you need at least 4 or 5 tiger barbs in a group. They need friends for one reason, and if you have just a couple, they'll end up picking on eachother. how big of a tank do you have? Kyle

I think the tiger barb is probably scared. He, along with your neon tetra, blood red tetra and zebra, prefer to be in at least a pair, preferably a group 4 or more...

As we talked about yesterday, you should see if you can get a credit for most of the fish in your tank and focus on one or two types of smaller fish. Tiger barbs are a cool, fun fish if they are in a group. I currently have 4 and they chase each other around the tank (not meanly, but in fun).

If you really like the looks of the tiger barbs, maybe you can see if you can trade in the other fish in your tank for 3 or 4 more of them. They get to be about 3" or so, but they're not extremely bulky fish and once fully grown, your tank would be a bit over it's bioload, but a good filter and water changes would keep it in check, and the barbs would have plenty of room. You could even keep one of your plecos for the bottom of the tank, though he may outgrow the tank in a year or two...

Good luck!!
