Do these guys work okay in a community tank, I've heard they can be a bit aggressive?

Is a 30 gallon tank large enough for a small school?

If so how big a school could I potentially have, if I wanted to have a second school of another fish (say neon tetras) and a few peppered corys? (that's if those species would work okay with barbs.)

Thanks in advance for any advice,

Kieren

they can be quite aggressive, I don't know about putting them in with neons per say, but I know that if you have a school of 3-6 it helps keep the aggression within the group instead of being inflicted on the rest of the tank mates. They are VERY nippy.

A 30g tank is perfect for tiger barbs alone. Tigers are really too nippy to be kept with other fish in a tank that small. I've heard of some people having success with using tigers as dithers for cichlids--but these are bigger fish that are usually quite agressive themselves.

I have a 30g with tigers, they are happy as can be, but put another fish in and it would be fish puree. They nip at everything, including my hand, arm, and python.

Well i'm going with the oppisite of the others, I say you can have tiger barbs in a community tank, but you have to take the right steps to getting them together. First off, i wouldn't have neons in with tigers, I would first get my cories and my other school of fish(maybe some blackskirts or a bigger tetra) and get them in the 30g. Of course only add a few each week and watch water parm. and etc. Second I would give the fish in the tank some time to get use to the tank. After all that is done i would add 5 tigers. I wouldn't go with any less than that or more. Also from what I have observed and have researched, tigers do better in odd groups. I currently have three and they are doing wonderful...Just remember this is all my 2 cents..... Good LUCK :cool2:

I have kept Tiger Barbs and Bronze Corys together, with no problems, for like 4 months now. As stated earlier if you get like 6 the agression will stay within the group. they just chase eachother around the tank alot.

I think that you can get away with tiger barbs with other fish, but it needs to be a tank bigger then a 30g. Grundy, a member on this site, has a 125g with tiger barbs and some corys. But Tiger barbs do pick through the substrate, which puts them right in the path of corys. And I can tell you from personal experience that I had nine tigers in with two large bronze cories, and the barbs would find the cories and nip them where ever they could find them. In a 30g, I would just do tigers. They will use all levels of the tank.

I have Tiger barbs in a community tank, no nipping, they also school with my Serpae tetras.... so they aren't that bad in my experience.

I think the cories would be OK with the barbs as long as 1. they had some hiding spots not easily accessible to the barbs and 2. you feed the cories after dark a couple of times per week. I think a group of 8-12 barbs would be great in the tank. I too am against barbs in community tanks - it may work for a while but is a disaster waiting to happen. Good luck and keep us posted!

My 29 gallon tank has 7 tiger barbs, 6 neons, 4 cories, and a BN pleco. The tiger barbs have been no problem, but they were added to the tank last. They have only been aggressive with each other.
