Tiger Barb tank mates, suggestions please..

Thanks for your comments and opinions everyone. After reading some additional information on the internet about Tiger Barbs and talking with my LFS owner, I ended up getting 5 Tigers, 5 Albino Tigers and a pair of Blue Gouramis (a color variation of the 3 spot Gouramis). These Gouramis are gorgeous, a blue marbled coloration. They are about 2 1/2 times larger than the Tigers. They don't seem to be itimidated by the Tigers and I am told these Gouramis are little more agressive than some. They get to be about 4-5 inches so I think the two will be fine in my set up. So far they are getting along fine. I will however keep a close eye. I'll post some pics soon. Thanks again.

I have 5 regular, 3 green and two albino's in my Barb tank along with 3 cherry barbs-all happy and active.

Come feeding time, it's toss in the food and close the lid quick-otherwise I'll get splashed!

I got a male and female, so far no problems with the aggression. But I can always move one of them to another tank if necessary. Watching them closely.

in a 36 gallon, only get one blue gourami. if you get two, you'll end up with one. blue gouramis are very aggressive towards other gouramis in general and they will fight and chase the weaker ones until they die.

I know this is the standard advice (and I wish I would have known then what I know now... ), but I think it's an over generalization. I have 6 Gourami in a 75G that I inherited as is, 1 Gold (~6"), 2 3-spot Blue (~3"), and 3 "Marbled" Blue (6" & 2 @ 3") and have had no problems since I've had the tank (which was also previously setup with the current stocking for almost a year). The only time I see ANY sort of aggresion is at feeding time and there's less between them than there is between the guppies!

Just my 2 cents...

a not-so aggressive cichlid like a firemouth or one of the numerous Cryptoheros sp. would loko nice, especially Hounduran redpoints

For the record, sometimes you get a firemouth that's a complete psycho. Mine kills any dithers I put in the tank, including large tiger barbs.

That is a good point, individual specimens are unpredictable,The generalizations are just broad guidelines when defining aggression levels.
