Not a good idea. Tiger barbs are major fin nippers and may nibble those nice "feelers" right off your gourami. You'd be better off going with a smaller specie of tetras, say red phantom tetras, black tetras, serpae tetras, blood fins... the list goes on.

A lot of people suggest not keeping goumais and barbs together. Since tiger barbs are such agressive fin nippers, they have been known to really chew up gourmains fins. However, I have successfully keep gourmais and tiger barbs without problems but only when the barbs have been a decent size school (I had 9), which really cuts down on the fin nipping. The larger groups also seems to ignore the other fish. I did have problems when I only had 4 barbs. The small group nipped everything in the tank.

Everything I have seen points to you needing at least 6 tiger barbs or so to keep themselves occupied enough not to pick on other fish.

The cories will probably be fine assuming there is lots of cover for them but they should be a a large group as well.

how many more cories should I have? I'm going to buy more later, but for now he has sufficient cover. And as to the Barbs, how many should I have (min. that fits in a 29gal.) to prevent fin-nipping? BTW, i'm getting rid of 1 of the gouramis

If you have the room for them try and keep at least 5 cories togther. They do best in groups.

ok thanks for the advice... i didn't return the opaline after all because they're getting along now.
