Tiger Barbs

If they went through the trouble of asking here and are told that it's a bad idea, why should they try it? Those pectoral feelers on gouramies are meant to be intact, not nipped off by some tiger barbs...to tell them to experiment with this idea is irresponsible at best.

My tiger barbs are a blast. They swim around the tank and amuse me. When i first got them they tried to nip the rainbows but they are too fast for them to nip and they wont go even close to Blitzkreig (rainbow shark) after all he is 5-5,1/2" still great though. As long as there are 5+ to entertain each other and tankmates are speedy, equaly aggresive, lack finnage. They are ok.

I AGREE!

from my past experiences with tiger barb in community tank:

1) they need to be in large groups (10+ at least)
2) they will be very aggressive towards other fish in the first 1-2 weeks (new fish into the tiger barb tank or new tiger barbs into existing community tank)
3) After the initial period, they dont bother other fish at all, mostly just keep to themselves provided the tank is not too overstocked.

same goes for gold barbs.

Personally, I would keep tiger barbs in a species only tank..they can get along with some tank mates..but I agree with chilidawg on this. they should not be mixed with some species.
anything with long fins is iffy at best with barbs. I would not recommend either gouramis or angels.
one reason I lwean towards a species only tank..if set up correctly ie biotope tank with a large school of tigerbarbs..it is an impressive set up.
some catfish will do okay with barbs.

I have set up a tank with barbs and rams..they did okay..the rams easily held their own with the barbs..but I am not inclined to recommend experimenting at thr risk of another fish to find out.

my father has kept congo tetras sucessfully with tiger barbs before in a 55G tank. he had 6 tiger barbs and 6 congo tetras. this is because congos are large, fast fish, and the barbs couldn't catch them. he also had them in with a rainbow shark, and they never messed with him 'cause he'd mess right back.

so, IMO, they are fine with other fish IF the fish you keep with them are fast, large, or are pretty aggressive themselves. fish that are slow or have long fins at all are a no-no.

The fact that hes quoted what i said shows that they agree with what i said. I didnt say they should go with gouramis.

I know that--you actually said not to go with fishes with flowing fins, so I was wondering why they agreed with it but said to go with gouramies anyway...

In my opinion, gouramis do not have long fins. Elongated maybe, like long and skinny, but not flowing like a betta's. Much of gouramis fins are ATTACHED TO THEIR BODY and the thinner part of their fins are going off their bodies. I've kept very aggressive bettas (ones that nip like crazy) and they go for mollies more than gouramis.

Hope that made sense.
