hey, all. I have these really really small (size of a pinhead) bugs living right on the surface my aquariums. I have no idea where they came from, I assume they are springtails because of their behavior of hopping across the water surface. they appear to be so light that they don't break the surface tension, and "beach" on the verge between my tank rim and the water surface, and my on my floating salvinia. does anyone know exacly what these are?

anyone?

You are correct, they're springtails.

I've got thousands of them!

My populations seem to fluctuate up and down depending on how much algae I have growing on my cover glasses. I think they feed on that stuff and I guess they came in with some plants at some point.

The bottom lines, they don't hurt your fish so there's nothing to worry about.

there are aquatic collembola and often seen in aquaria. not a problem to fish.

ok, thanks, I just never heard of aquatic springtails before.

those are gross! LOL

where do they come from?
springtails live everywhere. they are all over your house right now.

these springtails came with a fish I bought, I assume, since I haven't added any new plants recently.

did you HAVE to say that??!?! LOL

Now think about the millions of dust and skin mites living in your pillow....and your eyebrows. :D
