Tiny Tank

You could always let her pick out a pretty little betta for that tank. They come in lots of colors and she might just like finding one in her favorite color. You could coordinate the color of the gravel and put some nice silk plants in there...could set it up real nice for her and 3 gallons is not too small for a betta. Could even add an african dwarf frog or two to keep him company. Just make sure you don't pick up any clawed frogs...they get huge and would eventually eat the betta.

A beta and frog is a great idea for a small tank, but the frogs can be difficult to feed for a beginner. I had a problem getting mine to eat anything but live black worms which can be hard to find. How about a snail and a beta instead?

I had a frog for a while and didn't really care for him, he has since disappeared  !!! I would only recommend a betta. I have had neons in a 2.5g for quarantine (desperate, didn't have anything else) and they were not happy. A betta would be perfect for that tank :thm:

Thank you every one for your great advise, she has always loved the betas and has decided to go for a male.
Just one other thing she was wondering if she could possibly have a small catfish in there too? She has been doing some searching on the internet and found a catfish called a three lined catfish? Apparently someone had 3 of them in a 5 gallon tank, so she was kind of sort of thinking maybe one in a 3.3 gallon would be ok?
Either that or maybe a panda catfish or could someone else suggest a small one that may be ok in that tank?
Thanks again for all the advise I appreciate it!!! :bowing:

Linda

The three-lined and panda cory catfish are schooling and do best in groups of at least six, so I wouldn't recommend keeping just one in with the betta.

What about a snail or some ghost shrimp?

yep, the corys like to be in groups, and if you ever keep a lone one, you can see the difference in behavior when you get them some friends, they are not happy alone :o !! Even for the dwarf corys, I would not put a few in any less than a 5g and even that is not really big enough :(

Hi -- my daughter is 9 and likes to watch her golden mystery snail almost as much as the fish...a snail can do some pretty amazing moves, they're fun for kids to feed lettuce to, and might help keep such a small tank clean, as well.

What about a pair of otocinclus instead of the cories. Less active (better for a small tank). Kinda look like catfish, and they will eat that ugly brown algea that you are sure to get eventually (they're so good at it you'll have to supliment with algea wafers).

otocinclus or snails ! great ideas. the snails look boring in the store, mabe, but they are really cool once you get them home.
My 11 YO neighbor tried a betta/frog combo, but the frog was rarely in evidence and was Very difficult to feed. It is gone now, and I suspect it starved to death. She also tended to get WAY too much food in the tank, in an effort to get the frog to eat.
