I see SAEs all over my LFS's tanks, and they also have a tank labeled with SAEs and Flying foxes on another tank. But don't Flying foxes have a golden line through the top? Very beautiful SAE BTW.
I have seen both SAE and CAE labeled as such, and also as sucker loaches and flying foxes. Round here i think they just pick a name out of a bag and use that.
thats exactly it, I asked some of the people working at the stores if they know the scientific name and most say no, we just ask for algae eaters and they send us either CAE, flying foxes, and in this case even sae..

You know I'd say SAE except I have 1 that had a faint yellow tinge to the very high dorsal & 2+ years later it is a garra (cambodiensis?) not an SAE with yellowy fins & different mouth now. What size is yours Bk?

The mouth structure would have helped distinguish the Garra cambodgiensis though, wouldn't it, Nancy?

No, Lupin, the mouth changed over time, became more underslung. At first I thought it was ill when I noticed the mouth, the fins got yellower, the nares more prominent. I should have knowthough, it was much sweeter than my sometimes crabby SAEs.
