To Buy the Tank?

I've run across a used 125 gallon aquarium for $700. It includes the stand, metal hylide/ super actenic lights, a pump, and a filter. I was told that I would also get the rock used in his reef system if I buy it. The only thing I don't like is that it was already in use for 8 years before being taken down. What do you folks think? Should I dive on in?

i would but id ask to see pictures to see what condition everything is in. and also what type of lighting and filtration, ect.

It's mainly the age that makes me hesitate. Guessing how long it would last would require knowledge of many specific factors, but I'm looking for a general idea. If well-kept, how long does a tank of that size last? I'd hate to buy it, stock it, then have it leak into the floor.

The 90g we bought used has the sticker on the bottom from the factory stating it was made 10 years ago. No leaks for us. If it was well cared for, the silicone looks good, and there's no chips on any of the edges, I wouldn't worry beyond performing a simple leak test out on the porch before buying it. How long has it been torn down?

I've been using some tanks for over 20 years with no problems....just inspect the seams and reseal if it makes you feel better....

best case scenario would be to ask what brand of tank it is if its a top name brand then 8 yrs inst as bad as it sounds..also be sure the tank is not sitting dry this does weaken the seals .. names i trust are aga , oceanic , california customs, perfecto, american aquatics(also a custom company)..700 is not a bad price if they have good quality equipment(not fleabay knockoffs)and do it yourself lighting ..go look at the tank then make ur descission.i have purchased many used tanks in the past just toend up purchasing all new equipment for them just to feel safe about using them but if your purchasing used to cut the costs be sure your getting what you pay for.

The tank I mentioned before was for sale on ebay. I'm unsure if the decision was wise or foolish, but I went ahead and bought it. Being that my house's floor would likely not support it, I plan to set it up in my storage building; I'll warm the room with electric heat in winter and run a small air conditioner in summer.

After cycling it, I plan to under-stock the aquarium; this will result in good water quality with minimal water changes. Its first fish will be from my 2 current 29-gallon aquariums:

2 reef chromis

1 false percula clown

1 yellow watchman goby

1 royal gramma

1 fire fish

After sufficient algae growth, I'll add either a yellow tang or a flame angel.
