to keep moss out of filter...

You can cut a sponge designed for an aquaclear filter to fit over your intake to keep the moss out of hte filter. Other alternatives are using new nylon stocking, or a media bag. I find that the sponges for the ac30 work the best for me. I cut a small hole through the middle and slide it over.

It starts out white but after some time it ends up a neutral brown color. Penguin makes a black prefilter I believe. Most of mine are hidden by plants so I dont' really worry about it too much.

I use filter floss, helps clean up the flourite dust that I kick up when moving my plants around. It turns brown very quickly though.

I was at big al's and noticed they had all these blue coarse foam blocks behind the counter.(looked just like AC mechanical sponges, but blue, and not in boxes) I think I'll get a price-check; One of the bigger ones could make several prefilters, and coarse foam is fairly easily rinsed out.
