I use the AquaClear Filter sponge and it works good, also keeps small fish out of the filter. But if you do have moss floating around in the tank then you would still have to clean that sponge with a weekly water change since the moss would just stick to the sponge.

It's possible that they were cleaning sponges, however they were rectangular shapes varying in sizes looking like they would fit the various AC models(they were stacked up beside the AC filter part boxes, and there seemed to be one matching the size of most all the boxes). Far thicker(3-5x) than any cleaning sponge I've used short of a sponge for washing a car(they weren't that big, though, just that thick, 1-2").

The other option is an Eheim prefilter, if you can find one. They're perhaps 6" foam cylinders, hollow most of the way through so you can slide them over a 1/2" tube. IMO, that would be ideal, but I'm not sure how to get one without buying an Eheim pump...my 1250 came with one, but I lost it :/ lol
 
thanks guys, im gonna go with the AQ sponge
filter floss- before or after filter cartridges? I heard they should go in before or else they get clogged easily but if im using flourite should i put it in before the cartridges?
 
i have a penguin biowheel HOB for a 50 gallon on my 20 tall, which is going to be pretty heavily planted. in my 10 gallon which only has moss for plants, i have a topfin 20

The floss should be the last thing the water goes through before entering the tank.

EDIT: I have a Penguin and Top Fin, the AC sponges work well...just be sure to purchase the right size.
