Do I need something special for my 35 gallon tank? I have a very sturdy solid wood desk. All of the corners are braced with extra peices of tranange shaped wood. But it is not screwed together, it is built with a sort of tounge in groove style that is glued (I assume). The tank is a little longer then the desk, just a few inches, but I was thinking of putting down 3 2x4s (which would be the right depth for the tank) that were cut to the right length.

It is either that, or I do the REALLY cheap diy stand that I found here:

Thanks for the help. I love you guys! I'd be lost without you!

Stand

try looking to see if you have a Craigs list in your area and see if someone is giveing away a lg desk www.craigslist.com

If you want to use the desk, you could add a little bracing or some reinforcing brackets to shore it up a bit....

The tank weighs about 350 lbs. Get 500-600 lbs of people standing on it and kind of shake it a little. If it dosent move, break or bow you should be fine.

Comparing people to stands isn't valid.

The only concern I would have it with the overhang. If you can build a 2X4 square to support the full length and width of the tank, no problems. You do not want to leave any portion of the tank frame unsupported. DIY stands are pretty easy as well--all my tanks (from 15 up to 120 gallons) are on DIY stands, mostly 2x4's. Amazing how much a 2x4 will hold up!

Thanks...if I use the desk, I will definately had the 2x4s so there is no overhang.

But we may just end up with cinderblocks and 2x4s and forget about using the desk.

So many things to think about!

Hehe...if i had a dime for every cinder block/2X4 stand i've had...

or just spend the $50 for a stand

$50 I could do. All of the the stands I have found that will fit the deminsions of the tank I was looking at are wooden peices of furnature for $200 or more

Check craigslist, people give tank stands and other furnature that will work for tank stand for free...
