Too blue

Recently i have set up three new tanks and two are running fine at around ph 7-7.5. My water is slightly on the alkaline side. I also have a 4 foot 48 gallon tank and I accidentally overdid the aquasafe and the ph is around 9. The water has a slight blue tinge. Would the aquasafe make it more alkaline? How do you think it is best to rectify this problem?

in order to get it out of the system start doing daily 30-50% water changes until it goes away. if you do a ph test before each water change you should be able to track whether or not the aquasafe is the culprit.

Unfortunately i'm not familiar with aquasafe so I can't tell you if it would have spiked your pH like that. Hopefully someone else will be able to answer that one.

is the substrate different from the other tanks? do you have different rocks in that one? those things may have a hand in the pH going up as well.

Hi Lunchbox no they have all been set up using the same peagravel as I bought it in 3 very large sacks. The other tanks are only 20 gallon ones and done h ave any other rocks in them.
I am also thinking of burying two small terracotta pots, cleaned and steralised half into the gravel. Are these likely to affect the ph levels?

ok. the pots shouldn't really affect it at all. the reason I asked about the gravel and rocks is some rocks will affect your pH levels (usually moving it up).

if you dont' have any fish in the blue tank yet, you may just want to do one big water change and get rid of as much as you can in one shot, but if you have fish in there do the more gradual changes. once you get rid of the blue tinge test the water again and hopefully it'll be closer to where the other tanks are :)

good luck!

awesome! now we know for sure that too much aquasafe will raise pH too. good stuff to know ;)
Very interesting.

This is also why we stopped recommending Amquel to people. Apparently there are problems with it in low pH water.
