Since you are using amquel--check your test kit to make sure it differentiates between ammonia and ammonium. The amquel binds ammonia into ammonium, which is bio-available and non-toxic to fish. Many test kits give total ammonia/ammonium, which is misleading.
Too many fish too soon... AMMONIA !

I think I have the ammonia licked....
I did a 100% + water change over the past 24 hours, and added the external filter. So far so good.
