I can not get rid of an algae that is growing all over my plants. Is there some secret I am not aware of? Should I use a chemical to get rid of it? I fear that it might be covering my plants so much that it is blocking out light to them. Is this possible?

Alagae can definitely choke out a plant if left to grow at will.

What kind of algae is it? If it's a type of hair algae, then consider using Flourish Excel as an algaecide.

We need to know the type of algae

Brown, growing on the surface = diatoms
Long and stringy = hair
Somewhat long, yet branches off like a tree = staghorn

Tell us what it is and we can give you a solution
