gettin' hot
So the crappy little filter on my 20 long died and I have to order the one I want to replace it, The only spare I have is the big old emperor 400, ya think this would be way to strong for the little endlers and female bettas in there till they get a new filter? I could always restrict the flow a bit by partially blocking off the intake maybe? Whatcha' think?

I've always heard you can never have too much filtration. As long you watch for the current tossing the fish around (and adjust accordingly) you should be fine until you get your new filter.

All you have to do to kill the spillway agitation completely is cut a piece of that blue and white filter fiber for each spillway wide enough to for each spillway opening and long enough to reach all the way to the bottom inside the filter and use the cartridge end to pin down the end of the fiber to the bottom of the filter. The opposite end should be long enough to hang over the spillway and an inch below the water level. This not only eliminates all current agitation but acts as a wet/dry and will catch a surprising amount of dirt.

Here is a 10 gal I had set up to grow out my mosquito fish . I placed (wedged )a couple breeder traps under the outflow to eliminate the current.

i have 6 10G tanks i use old emperor 400's on no problem with the current. and it keeps them very clean, these are giant ramshorn breeding tanks.
