Hi, is it possible to have too much light over your reef tank?I intend having a triple 250w halide pendant accompanied with 2 x actinic 58w tubes over my 100g reef.Is 866w ok as i do not want to be restricted to what corals/inverts i can keep.

There will be some corals that will prefer to be closer to the bottom of the tank, and those that will do best very close to the lights. Monitor their behavior to determine if something needs to be moved. Another consideration will be the difference between your lights and those of the store. If a coral is adapted to lower lighting conditions, you may need to start with it lower in the tank, and allow the coral to get used to the higher light within your tank. 8.6 watts/gallon isn't too high--I know people who have 10 watts/gallon on smaller tanks.

You might also want to monitor the temp of the tank--lighting can heat up the water significantly, and that can cause problems as well.
