too much live rock?

Too much live rock can inhibit circulation to the point that detritus builds up. It can also take up a significant portion of the swimming space that fish would benefit from.

Running a HOB with filter media can be useful, especially if it's being used to run chemical media like carbon or GFO (phosphate remover). However, it's not something I do for added bio-filtration.

One thing to consider when thinking about adding bio-filtration is that the bacteria in the nitrogen cycle will only work as hard as needed to process what's available. If the current level of bio-filtration is enough to appropriately handle the bio-load and the bio-load itself doesn't increase, any additional bio-filtration may come at an added cost (electricity, maintenance time, media expenses) without much of a true benefit.
