Too much salt?

yeah...first and last time i buy their salt. the bucket i purchased said the same thing but i did my own experimenting before i mixed for tank. just didn't seem right to me.

DansMarine--it still means I was putting in excess of 2500 g into a 20 gallon tank. I do have a hydrometer.

2.5 KG that sounds about right, use the instructions as a guidline then the hydromer - freshwater or salt to fine tune to the desired sal - i have mine at 1.025 closer to ocean water than 1.022 that red sea reconmend

Have you also considered the possibility that while the tank may hold 20G of water, once you add sand, rock and any other 'objects', you're down to 17-18G in most cases?

Good point, jjirsa. I think I'll do what the lady at Red Sea suggested--dissolve enough salt into a bucket full of water until I hit the recommended salinity, and then add the salt/water solution into the tank that way.

Thanks for the help everyone!!!

Get a specific gravity meter. You absolutely need one of those if you're doing marine. They're really cheap and essential in my opinion.

That's the best way. I use instant ocean reef crystals. I never look at the back of the bag and I'm still not sure if they have instructions. The recommended amount really means nothing. Just add salt until you get the salinity you want, using an Instant Ocean hydrometer, not one that sits in the tank. I would say around 1.025, because that's what the fish would be living in if they were in the ocean.

 1.4 lbs per 5 gallons??!!! good god!!! most salts ive seen used,(I use I.O Reef Crystals) usually 1/2 cup per gallon equalls about 1.022, give or take. Always use a hydrometer/refractometer, and screw what the bag says!!
