Top-feeding freshwater fish?

It's your job to research a fish's needs before you buy. You can not rely on the information from sales people. Please keep this in mind for future purchases.

You're right. That said, think about how many people on the site started out in the hobby this exact same way. I, for one, trusted the advice of chain pet stores when I set up my first tank. It's a trial and error sort of thing; your fish die and you start poking around for more info. I didn't even know that sites like AC existed when I set up my first tank, and it was so easy for me to assume that pet store employees would give me sound advice. ;)

Aside from all this, it appears from the original post that the killi was a gift, and the OP is at least trying to learn about the species and do her best to give the fish a good home. Fortunately, I've never been put in that position myself, but if I were I don't imagine I'd have a better course of action than to post here and try to learn as much as possible.

And how are you supposed to know what's there before you go? Especially when your local pet store gets different fish every week. Should I go there, look, write down all their names, go back home, look them up, and go back out and get them? That sounds great but I don't live in that world.

Yes. IMO (In My Opinion). But as much as I hate to admit it, I started out as a clueless fish killer / keeper and I completely applaud your efforts to do right by the fish alot sooner than I knew to. :)

It's called doing research about fish you like and are able to properly keep then finding those ones. You should never buy any pets on an impulse, fish included. You gotta train your man. xD My boyfriend just surprises me by paying after I pick out my fish when we go to the lfs. Thus, no stocking issues.

Yes, yes. :D

Sadly, I may be able to claim "Worst fishkeeping start ever". I kept 5-6 Koi in a 2.5G tank and pretty much just replaced as they died. I also listened to the "knowledgeable" PetWhatever employee. :(

This is exactly what you should do. It's what I do, it's what countless other people do. Or you can figure out fish you like that you see pics of on here, research if they work, then see where you can buy them. Trusting average chain store salespeople and their advice is a huge no-no here.

You are doing the right thing of ID'ing the fish you got as a gift. Now you face the decision to take it back, or see what happends.

i think a lot of started off as terrible fish keepers. that being said, now that the individual knows where to look for dependable information, there are few excuses that are plausible.

take the killi back. move the newts. wont the newts need a dryer area of land to walk around on anyway? start digging around the board for answers to your questions. you can find a lot of information without having to ask if you poke around a bit
