I just got a Top Fin 50w heater from petsmart. I put it in the 10g tank. I set the lowest setting and the water reach to 79F. I think it defective. Is Top Fin a reliable brand? I have a visi-therm stealth for 2 to 3 years and still reliable.

Should I exchange it or get the visi-therm stealth?

I think Top Fin is an okay brand. I doubt that there is anything wrong with it. I think that 25w is actually fine for a 10g. What's wrong with 79 degrees? That's the ideal temp for most tropical fish. Do you have a coldwater tank? If so, why are you using a heater?

I'd go with the most reliable heater you could.

From my past experiance, all the heater can be set it lower than 79F. This is the lowest I can set. I don't want to slow cooking my shrimp if it malfunction.

Btw, have anyone know there is a $5 in store petsmart coupon? I used it last Sunday. You guy could find it online.

Isn't Top Fin just Petsmart's rebranding name? Knowing who actually made the heater would help in finding more reviews.

Is it possible that your house is also at 79 degrees? Even if you set the heater lower, it's not like it would cool your tank down.

My house temp. in mid to high 60s.
Thanks for everyone input. I'll go for visi-therm stealth.

I had a top fin, threw it out about a month later (came with a kit, don't even have one piece that came with it, heck, I aint even running the tank).

But that filter kept overheating my water, I just threw it out and got a stealth, aint been sorry.
