Topping off?

Also, chloramine will not gas off like chlorine does.

true. you do need to know what your local water treatment facility uses, so that you can determine what dechlorinator to use (many won't take care of the free ammonia after breaking the ammonia and chlorine bond that is chloramine).

up here, the only dechlor i have found to safely treat chloramine treated water and convert the remaining free ammonia is Prime.

You can get a little glass dropper and use that to just put in 2-3 drops of prime. Prime is more concentrated than other types of dechlor, so you only need a few drops per gallon.

Thanks for all the tips guys. You have been super helpful. I never even thought of using a dropper. It's a great idea. Even if overdosing won't hurt anything, it's always nice to know you're not wasting it too.

If you can find a 50 ml bottle of Prime, it has a dropper cap. Good for smaller tank water changes :)

Yeah I bought the smallest bottle of prime when I started. It has the dropper cap. Now I just fill that from my large prime bottle so I can measure correctly. You know what? Think I'm gonna check if the small prime bottle dropper cap fits my large bottle of prime. That would be sweet

The only thing I don't like about prime is the fact that it smells like rotten eggs.

If you're adding the dechlorinator to the tank itself, you need to use enough to dechlorinate the entire tank volume, not just what's being added. If you only want to add it to the water being added, you need to mix it prior to pouring the water into the tank. ...even when using buckets.
+1

That's what I do. I saved the dropper cap and put it on all the new 500ml bottles as I buy them.

Oh, that's funny ... I saved the little bottle for when I'm doing small changes on my 10g or acclimating new fish (one drop for the water they've been traveling in) and just keep refilling it from the bigger bottle. Whatever works. :)
