I wouldn't go mixing species, not for a long time. I have never mixed species in my 10+ years now of keeping reptiles. I just don't feel right doing it.
If you are interested in crested geckos I'd recommend a taller aquarium. You want something 2 feet tall. If you had a way to construct a front for one of your tanks, you could do that as well. Just an idea. I use an exo-terra 18x18x18" terrarium to house a single crested gecko in currently, and plan to upgrade to the 24" tall one once I can get my hands on one for a reasonable amount.
Cresteds are great because not only do they eat crickets, but they eat crested gecko diet, as well as some fruits on occasion. I have fed mine banana and honeydew as a treat, and they love it. They do not require heat (but if you keep plants you will want lighting), and you do not want them to go over 80F at any time. They are excellent starter lizards as well, and very easy to maintain. I wouldn't let a young child handle one, as they will drop their tails easily, and will sometimes bite (and yes, it hurts. My female bites all the time as she isn't used to being handled). I'd only get 1 to start, that way you can accurately sex it before buying another. If possible I'd go through a breeder and find adult females, that way if you want 2 you do not have to worry about them mating.
Reptile shows are a great way to get cresteds as well, but females will always be more money it seems (unless you don't care about not having a tail). I spent around $100 at the NARBC last year to get a female with a tail, as I am big on my lizards having their original tails when I first get them. Craigslist is also a great way to find people rehoming.
Here are a few careguides:

I'd take the cresteds over other arboreal lizards since they can be handled. My other crested, a male, was purchased as a juvenile. He is extremely friendly and will sit on the corner of my laptop with me all the time.
They are really cute
