I have had plenty of tanks in the past but never any with real plants. I'm thinking about setting up a 10g betta tank and I saw some bettas in the plant tank of my local fish store. they looked so happy and the green looked great with the betta's colors.

So where is a good place to start? I tried looking online but everything is so confusing. I would really like to keep this as simple as I can. Just some suggestions of lights, plants and anything else that I will need :)

1- get a 10g tank ($11)
2- get regular gravel/sand ($8-10)
3- get a piece of wood or a lava stone ($3-5)
4- get a light for incandescent bulbs from walmart/petland discounts ($10-20)
5- get a pack of 9w screw in compact fluorescent bulbs from homedepot ($8 4pack)
6- finally get low light plants such as anubias, ferns, crypts

After that scape as desired and you are all set
 
:iagree: Although, if you choose to go with aplaysand substrate, a bag of 50 pounds will be about 4 dollars. Then, you can try to find some rocks around where you live, clean them up and add them to the tank.
 
I am not too sure I would use a lava stone as they are very rough and may shred the betta's fins.....My Betta has a 10 gallon tank with some water wisteria, java moss and java ferns. He sleeps on top of the moss and loves all the room he has!

make sure its plain sand and not those specific for african tanks which will buffer water/or make it more alkaline
