I am about to get a 55g aquarium and I was wondering what are some tough cichlids I can put in it. They need to be able to put up with some convits and a jewel cichlid. I don't want them to be huge so see if you can keep them between 4-6in. They also can't be really expensive. :feedback:

I am looking for central/south america cichlids because I don't want to have to deal with Malawi bloat and I don't want to change my pH a whole bunch.

You have the room to support the bio-load, but do you have the space for the territory that the fish will claim?

A pair of Convicts are quite capable of killing an adult Oscar if they are in the mood to breed.

Saying that they are all aggressive fish doesn't mean they can live together, it may just mean that they kill each other.

Because convicts are so protective and prolific any tank will essentially end up becoming a convict tank. The Jewel may be aggressive enough to hold its own, but not many fish are.

If you have a spare tank you might want to move the convicts to that tank and start over with a cichlid community tank.

The problem isn't the bioload (inches of fish/size of tank) but the fact that either species will want to claim most of the tank for breeding territory. You may be able to keep some other fish, Australian rainbows or giant danio's should be fast enough to stay alive, but more cichlids would most likely be beat up or killed rather quickly.

if that is the case, them I will take out convicts from my stocking plans. What else can I put in there?
