We have a Salt Level Test kit made by Pond Care [Aquarium Pharmaceuticals, Inc.]. One of the test chemicals is Mercuric Nitrate monohydrate. They indicate that it is 'very toxic' [T+], but they do not give any instructions on how to safely dispose of the stuff. I am concerned about pouring mercury down my drain and into the nearest river. Are there salt test kits that do not use mercury?

Do a search for your state's disposal services, usually a department of "environmental protection agency" or "environmental quality council" handles collection sites throughout the state for collection of household chemicals, hobby chemicals, oil based paints, old batteries etc...

For Illinois, the first link given, had the one-day sites for the year and all year collection sites.
