Transfer of RTBS

move the whole filter

yes there are still old fish in my old tank.

perhaps I will go buy a new sponge for the old tank, and put old sponge just in my new tank.

how long should i leave in the new tank for?

it is best for both tanks if you just take a cutting.....i would be worried about the fish and the tank more than the test kit at the moment.
did you put in a water conditoner????

Are there still fish in your old tank? If so you wouldn't want to move the whole filter because then your other fish will lose the bacteria.

yeah the new tank has a filter on it. it's been set up for a little over 24 hours with the filter running. the water was taken from the old tank yesterday as well.

Ok I'm going to go cut some of the old media and put it in the tank.

Thank you all so much.

If it were my tank, I'd remove some of the media from the filter on the old tank. If there's just one sponge then maybe cut it in half. If there's a biobag sort of thing and a sponge, take on or the other and put this in the filter (if possible) on the shark's tank. What conditioner do you use? If you have Prime or something else that detoxifies ammonia, do a water change and use it, this will buy you some time. After you've done that, then get your test kit and keep an eye on the water in that tank for as long as he's there.

So I still had my old "media" wrapped in plastic in the garbage from when i did a water change in my old tank on sat. I have taken it out of the plastic and put it in the new tank.

I also cut about 1/4'' of the current filter on the old tank and put that in the new tank.

How long should I leave these in there for?

So I still had my old "media" wrapped in plastic in the garbage from when i did a water change in my old tank on sat. Was it still wet? If it dried out I don't know how many bacteria might still be alive. I have taken it out of the plastic and put it in the new tank.

I also cut about 1/4'' of the current filter on the old tank and put that in the new tank. One thing I've learned since joining this sight, is to only rinse the filter media in old tank water and keep reusing it. Every time you toss out the media, you toss out much of your good bacteria, because that's where they live. And it's these bacteria that convert the harmful chemicals to not so harmful chemicals.

How long should I leave these in there for?

I don't really know. Is there gravel in the new tank? I'm not exactly sure how long it will take for the bacteria to reproduce and then start to occupy the surfaces in your filter on your gravel.

Start testing the water though, and get some Prime to treat the water. How long is the shark staying in the new aquarium, and where is he going afterwards? I know it's not really germane, but I'm nosy, why did you take him out of the old tank? You don't have to answer of course, but I thought I'd ask. This can all be really confusing, but it gets easier :)
