Treating a seeded sponge filter for snails

I'm not a fan of using copper, basically because most aquariums I own have shrimp in them too.

they won't die due to being in the bag, they will just hang out, but stay separated from the main aquarium, the material will not be water tight, so the bacteria will still work.

safest way to clean the sponges would be to soak in a bleach solution, and then to re-seed while in a filter bag,

if you are sure you will never want any invertebrate of any kind, just use copper

That's a great idea with putting the sponge in a filter bag. I mail-ordered some mesh bags recently to replace some of my bio media bags that are worn out. These replacements are fine enough mesh that they should keep snails in/out.

The mesh of these bags is 2mm. Newly hatched snails might be small enough to get through the mesh.
