Treating BBA in a sensitive tank

I think it is finally my turn to deal with the dreaded BBA folks. I have found very small algae like growths on some plants in my Oto tank. They don't look like the fuzzy pics I've seen of BBA so it may just be the very beginings of it. I'll try and get a couple pics up for a better ID.

I know to use H2O2 directly on it to wipe it but my problem is this is my Oto breeding tank therefore extremely sensitive. Can't risk that. Worse comes to worse, I will pull the plants and replace them.

At this time, I am contimplating adding about (3) Amano's if I can find them. Will have to see if they get along with Yellows.

Any other thoughts?

if you have Prime, you can actually kill the BBA by dipping affected plants or decor in pure Prime. i've heard of this used a few times with pretty good success.

H2O2 wont be much of a problem in your tank though. it should convert to H2O and O2 fairly quickly

I've used H2O2 on several occasions to kill BBA. Works well, just keep the filter running if you're doing it in the tank. Find a syringe and directly apply to the affected areas

Don't feel comfortable adding anything to tank. Too sensitive. JM...I may try the Prime method. I have a couple of Anubias plants that I have already removed.

How long would you dip the plants in the Prime? And is the Prime still usable after treatment?

oto breeding? are you successful? i thought otos were one of the fish that very rarely breed in a aquarium?

i have 12 otos in my 55 and i've used a TON of h202 in my tank. i see no reason that you cant use it. like jm said it converts to water and oxygen pretty quick.

also. you dont keep the filter running. you turn it off for a few minutes so that there is no circulation at all. spot treat the areas. leave the filters off for a few more minutes so that the h2o2 sits on the affected area and then turn it back on.

people use h202 in the events of power outages because it adds oxygen to the water

Quite so actually. Have been very fortunate that my little ones feel comfortable enough in their environment. I keep a Journal over in the Catfish section.

It's for that reason that I don't do anything to the tank. If not for the breeding, I would have already shot it with H2O2.

You can remove the plants (anubias is especially easy) and dip the leaves in a solution of Excel and tank water mixed maybe 50-50 or slightly less Excel and more water. I just dip and swish around and then dip the plant back in a bucket of tank water (or dechlorinated tap) and return to the tank. The BBA should turn red and die off.
